If you can adjust the shutter speed on your camera you can light paint. Even if you can’t make such adjustments, try it anyway. It’s fun to experiment with this technique with Christmas lights this time of year.
This was an experiment in light painting. I took these shots on the I-5 freeway corridor just before full dark. I was in the passenger seat of our pickup. We were headed south.
I slowed my shutter speed way down to 1.6 seconds.
On these middle two shots, I just held the camera in one spot and let the vibration of the vehicle move it for me.
In the first shot, I moved my camera back and forth. In the last, which was in a small city with the business lights, I moved the camera in a circular pattern.
It’s fun to experiement in painting with light. Try it!
